Popz! Black Girl Magic ✨ Running, Community & the Power of Fitness

Hey Boodies,

This week,
we’re featuring the powerhouse Popz - run club coach, Black Women Rising ambassador, and fitness enthusiast. She’s not just about hitting goals in the gym; Popz is all about creating community, empowering others, and keeping it real along the way. Whether she's running marathons, breaking barriers, or keeping things light with some cake (because balance, right?), Popz is someone we can all learn from. Get ready for some real talk on fitness, resilience, and the importance of a strong community.

You’re a Run Club Coach, Black Women Rising Ambassador, and fitness enthusiast – how do these roles influence your approach to health and wellness?

Oh my gosh! That sounds like a lot of roles! I think they influence my approach because it’s not just about me—it’s about the people who look to me and follow me. Every role is a blessing, and I’m fortunate enough to use my story to inspire and bless others. That’s the 'why' behind everything!

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

The desire to eat cake! 🧁 Honestly though, I’m passionate, disciplined, and clear on the purpose of keeping fit. My goals keep me driven, and my tribe pushes me to do my best!

Running is often a solo sport, but you’ve created a thriving community. What’s the most fulfilling part of leading a run club?

The support I never had! I started running alone back in 2014, but now, seeing others thrive and break through barriers is honestly heartwarming! I didn’t know I’d love running with people until I started with my daughter during COVID—now, I love seeing my community grow!

What makes your community so special?

Our heart! Everyone is passionate about bringing out the best in one another, and watching that love and support grow is so special. It's wholesome and inspiring!

As a Black Women Rising Ambassador, you’re a voice for empowerment and visibility. How does this influence your message to others?

I just want to be the voice I never had. Navigating cancer alone was hard, and I want to share my struggles to help others feel seen and supported. My message is always transparent because I want to normalize the experience and show that I’m not special—I’m human, just like everyone else.

Any key takeaways for the BOOD community?

Life is short! Do the things that bring you genuine joy. Movement is medicine—throw in some burpees from time to time and don’t be afraid to eat cake. 😉

For those starting out or looking to improve their fitness, what’s one lesson you’ve learned that everyone should know?

Everyone starts somewhere! Don’t be afraid to begin—find what you enjoy. Your fitness journey is a marathon, not a sprint. But be intentional and stay consistent!

Can you walk us through a typical training day and how you stay focused, even on the tough days?

This one’s tough! But… LEG DAY! 😫 I wake up at 4am to train. I start with 3 sets of pull-ups (aiming for 5 by the end of 2025, but I ate too many dumplings in Jamaica!). After a 5-minute warm-up, it’s all about hip thrusts, Romanian deadlifts, Bulgarian split squats (tears included), and chair back extensions. I finish with an angled leg press, then I either run on the treadmill for 30 minutes or hit the road. On tough days, I remind myself I need to be a strong role model for my daughter—she’s watching!

Community and resilience are essential in fitness. What do these mean to you, and how do they play a part in your journey?

Community reminds you you’re never alone. Our journeys can feel lonely, but community silences that voice telling you to give up. Resilience is like the fuel, and community is the road to greatness—sometimes, they’ll lend you their faith when you’ve run out of your own.

What’s one goal you’re working towards right now, and how can our readers cheer you on?

I just got into the London Marathon—EEK! 😱 I’m running for Black Women Rising, raising funds and awareness for women like me who’ve had cancer. I’m nervous, but it’s a challenge I know I’ll conquer! Thank you for believing in me, Corey, Kris, and all the BOOD team. You all are amazing! ❤️

Let’s cheer on Popz as she takes on the London Marathon!

Her journey is one of strength, resilience, and community, and we’re here for it!

Let’s show her the love and support she deserves.
